Shivasamudram Falls: The Complete Guide to a One-Day Trip from Bengaluru

It was my first time driving a four-wheeler solo โ€” and I chose to do it for 300 kilometres on the open road. Bold? Perhaps. But there is something about the promise of cascading waterfalls that makes you throw caution to the wind.

This was September 2020, the world was carefully emerging from the Covid-19 lockdown, and Shivasamudram was one of the few destinations in Karnataka that had reopened. We packed breakfast and lunch from home, skipped the hotel stay entirely, and headed out before sunrise. What followed was one of the most memorable day trips I have ever done from Bengaluru.

If you are planning a similar trip, here is everything you need to know.

What is Shivasamudram?

Shivasamudram is a small island town in Karnataka, nestled between the two branches of the Kaveri River. The river splits around the town and plunges dramatically on both sides, creating two distinct waterfalls โ€” Barachukki to the east and Gaganachukki to the west. Together, these twin falls are collectively known as Shivasamudram Falls (also spelled Shivanasamudra Falls).

This is not just a natural spectacle โ€” the area is also home to one of India’s earliest hydroelectric power stations, built in 1902, which once supplied power all the way to the Kolar Gold Fields.

Barachukki and Gaganachukki: What’s the Difference?

A common misconception among first-time visitors is that Barachukki and Gaganachukki are two segments of the same waterfall. They are actually separate falls located a few kilometres apart from each other.

Barachukki Falls is the wider of the two, with the Kaveri river spreading across multiple rocky segments before tumbling down approximately 69 metres. During the monsoons, it fans out dramatically across the hillside โ€” it is the fall you will most commonly see in photographs of Shivasamudram.

Gaganachukki Falls is the taller of the two, dropping about 98 metres in a more concentrated, powerful cascade. The name translates loosely to “sky waterfall,” which feels apt when you see it in full monsoon flow. Stairs are built at both sites to bring you closer to the falls and offer excellent viewpoints.

Best Time to Visit Shivasamudram Falls

The best months to visit are July to October, during and just after the monsoon season, when both falls are in full, roaring flow. Outside this window, the falls can reduce to a trickle, which can be disappointing after the long drive.

We visited in late September and the falls were absolutely breathtaking โ€” well worth timing your trip around.

Suggested One-Day Itinerary

Here is the itinerary we followed, which worked out well:

  1. 6:00 AM โ€” Depart Bengaluru via Kanakapura Road
  2. 9:00 AM โ€” Arrive at Barachukki Falls. Spend 30โ€“40 minutes exploring the viewpoints and taking photographs.
  3. 10:00 AM โ€” Visit the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Shivasamudram (see related post below).
  4. 10:30 AM โ€” Drive to Gaganachukki Falls. Spend about an hour here.
  5. 1:30 PM โ€” Lunch at Talakad (we had packed food from home, but there are small eateries here).
  6. 2:00 PM โ€” Explore Talakad, a scenic town on the banks of the Kaveri with a sandy riverbank that makes for a lovely short stop.
  7. 3:00 PM โ€” Begin the return drive to Bengaluru.
  8. 7:00 PM โ€” Back in Bengaluru.

Pro tip: Pack your own food and water, especially if you are visiting on a weekend. The area around the falls has limited food options, and the ones that exist can get crowded.

Other Places to Visit Near Shivasamudram

Talakad is a short drive away and sits on the sandy banks of the Kaveri. It is a popular day-out spot for families from Bengaluru and Mysuru who want a riverside experience without travelling to the coast. We stopped here briefly but moved on due to large crowds.

Somnathpura is home to the stunning 13th-century Hoysala temple of Keshava, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a worthwhile addition if you have time.

Bheemeshwari is a wildlife and nature camp on the Kaveri, ideal for adventure activities like coracle rides and river rafting. It really deserves a full two-day trip on its own.

The temples at Shivasamudram island โ€” including the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple and Someshwara Temple โ€” are covered in a separate post.

How to Reach Shivasamudram from Bengaluru

The most direct route is via Kanakapura Road (NH 948), passing through Kanakapura town and then Malavalli. The drive takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic out of Bengaluru. We recommend leaving by 6 AM to avoid city traffic and reach the falls before the morning crowds.

There are KSRTC buses from Bengaluru to Malavalli, from where you can hire an auto-rickshaw to the falls. However, having your own vehicle gives you far more flexibility to cover both falls and the nearby sights in a single day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I visit Shivasamudram in summer? The falls are considerably reduced in summer (Marchโ€“June) and may not be worth the long drive. The monsoon and post-monsoon months (Julyโ€“October) are strongly recommended.

Q: Are Barachukki and Gaganachukki the same waterfall? No โ€” this is a common misconception. They are two separate falls a few kilometres apart, formed by the two branches of the Kaveri River splitting around Shivasamudram island.

Q: Is Shivasamudram safe for swimming? Swimming is not permitted near the falls due to strong currents. Please follow the safety guidelines at the site.

Q: Can I combine Shivasamudram with Mysuru in one trip? Yes โ€” Mysuru is about 80 km from Shivasamudram. If you are a confident driver and start very early, you can cover both, though it makes for a tiring day. An overnight stay in Mysuru is a more relaxed option.

Q: Is there an entry fee at Shivasamudram Falls? A nominal entry fee is charged at the viewpoints. The exact amount may vary โ€” it was minimal during our visit.
